Santa Claus of Chaffey District, Inc. was founded in 1955 by two women who attended a Parent Teacher Association meeting and noticed a female student playing outside in the cold without a jacket. These women asked the girl’s teacher if they could make a jacket for her, but they were told she had a sister as well and would need to make two. The two women made the jackets, but they also included two dolls in packages that they gave to the young girls’ parents to give them on Christmas from Santa Claus. Today, their act of kindness has developed into a non-profit organization that works all year to provide the “Santa Claus” experience to over 4,000 children every year.
Santa’s Workshop in the Inland Empire
Donations of both new and gently used items are received entirely from the local community from February through December. Santa Claus of Chaffey District, Inc. works hard to repair and refurbish the used items, and groups them together with new toys in packages that are displayed on the facility’s shelves. The parents of children in need of gifts visit their facility where they are able to shop around for packages that best fit each of their children so they are able to experience Santa Claus leaving them presents.
Santa’s Elves Working Year Round
In order for this project to be possible, volunteers contributing their time and talents is necessary.
“I do this because I can’t stand the thought of any child not having a good Christmas,” said Pat Ross, a retired attorney who is now the Executive Director of Santa Claus of Chaffey District, Inc.
When you walk through the workshop, you will find volunteers in every room organizing, cleaning, repairing and wrapping the donated toys. “Santa’s Elves” are assigned to different stations such as the bicycle repair and motorized vehicle repair station. Other stations include quilting, dolls, baby clothes, family gifts, and mechanical repair stations.
Help from the Community
Recipients are referred by school and county nurses, social service organizations, churches and county welfare. Each child receives two toys, some books and candy. Children under the age of 1 receive clothing. Some families are randomly selected to receive an additional gift such as a wagon, doll house, rocking horse, bicycle, child size table and chairs, electronic items and special baskets of house old items.
Volunteers and donations make this operation a success. Donations are used to cover the operating expenses; and the donations are eventually given to the children and families.
Applications for parents to participate will be accepted November 13 to 18, 2017 from 9 AM - 3 PM.
