Weekly Round Up: September 9

Good news. It is already Tuesday! Welcome back from the long weekend. Here’s what happened last week, and what’s in store for the week ahead. In a few words: Hotel stays are up, QVC project is moving ahead, and local businesses new and established are making the news.

BOOK IT: Occupancy at Ontario hotels continue to increase, according to July’s lodging data released by the Greater Ontario Convention and Visitors Bureau. Ontario occupancy is at 82%, up 5% year over year. The average daily rate is $84.26, up 10% compare to last year. In total, Ontario has 47 hotels and an inventory of 5,311 rooms per day. Compare that to top tourist destination Long Beach – a city of 468,000 – which has 58 hotels and an inventory of 6,092 rooms, and it appears that Ontario is a top destination in its own right. In May, Ontario hotels sold 126,590 rooms compared to Long Beach, which sold 148,354. What is driving hotel sales in Ontario, you ask? Large events and conferences hosted at the Ontario Convention Center are one reason. Other reasons include the proximity to the Ontario International Airport, attractions at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, and some 10,000 businesses in the City, many of which fly in executives or customers for meetings at their corporate offices.
